This tree grows 8-10m high with a straight, smooth, grey trunk with pyramidal crown. Leaves are bright green and smooth, or brownish-velvety beneath along the midrib and veins. Small male and female flowers on separate trees from April to May in large clusters, along densely greyish-yellow, light brown hairy axes. Female flowers red. Shiny brown fruits. Poisonous leaves.
Asian fruit fly is the world’s worst destructive pest of fruit and vegetables. Of major concern is the increase in trade and tourism as this increases the risk of infested fruit being carried across South African borders. It is an offence to import plants and plant material into South Africa without authorisation. Luggage is frequently scanned or sniffed by sniffer dogs to detect fruit and other plant products.
Australian water clover is an aquatic water clover. It has reddish-brown stripes that split the darker green on the top half of the leaflets and the lighter green of the lower half. It reaches 4 to 12cm tall, spreads, and will grow in sun or shade. It also will grow in damp soil. It is very cold hardy - it will take temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius.
Bent grass is grey-green, rather fine-leaved perennials, forming tufts 30–90 cm, with long slender rhizomes; branching intravaginal. Leaf-sheath glabrous, brownish green or purplish. Ligule 0.7–2 mm, or up to 3 mm in culm leaves, taller than wide, somewhat tapered or rounded, minutely ciliate.
